Cos’è il Past Perfect Progressive?
Corrisponde al Present Perfect Progressive ma fa riferimento al passato
La costruzione è uguale al Past Perfect con l’aggiunta del famoso verbo alla forma base in -ing, altrimenti non si chiamerebbe progressive

Costruzione del Past Perfect Progressive, forma affermativa:
Sogg. + Had Been + V1-ing
Costruzione del Past Perfect Progressive, forma negativa:
Sogg. + Had not/ hadn’t Been + V1-ing
Costruzione del Past Perfect Progressive, forma interrogativa:
Had + Sogg. + Been + V1-ing

Quando si usa il Past Perfect Progressive?
Generalmente il Present Perfect Progressive viene usato utilizzando un verbo di azione interrotto da un’altra azione che è generalmente un Past Simple
Viene spesso utilizzato quando ci sono parole come “since”, “for” e “when” con verbi di azione (to walk, to teach, to eat, to talk, to run, ecc.)
Frasi con il Past Perfect Progressive in inglese:
They had been talking for over one hour before Tony arrived.
Hanno parlato più di un’ora prima che Tony arrivasse.
James had been teaching at the university for 5 years before he left for Asia.
James ha insegnato all’università per 5 anni prima di partire/ che partisse per l’Asia.
He was so tired because he had been running so hard.
Lui era molto stanco perché ha corso duramente.
Nota Bene
Con i verbi d’azione possiamo usare sia il “Past Perfect” che il “Past Perfect Progressive”
Frasi con il past perfect progressive in inglese:
I had been playing on the net, when suddenly I heard a loud noise.
Stavo giocando su internet quando all’improvviso ho sentito un forte rumore.

I had played on the net,when suddenly I heard a loud noise.
Stavo giocando su internet quando all’improvviso ho sentito un forte rumore.
ENTRAMBE LE FRASI VANNO BENE
Nei verbi di stato o percezione viene usato il Past Perfect
Frasi con il Past Perfect in inglese:
The car had belonged to George for years before Tina bought it.
La macchina apparteneva a George da anni prima che Tina la comprò.
Altra frase:
He had had a new motorbike for 2 days when it broke.
Aveva una moto nuova da due giorni quando si ruppe.
Si può usare SOLO il Past Perfect “had belonged” e “had had” e non “had been belonging” e “had been having” perché sono verbi di stato e non di azione.
